In a time when few thought it possible, Bernie Sanders and his wife launched a children’s baseball league in the Old North End while Bernie was serving as Burlington’s Mayor. On Saturday, April 17, 1982, Bernie and two city attorneys joined forces to coach the inaugural practice for ninety eager youngsters. Every child interested in playing was warmly welcomed onto a team, given a free uniform, and had the $2.00 program fee waived if needed. The league thrived on the dedication of neighborhood volunteers who filled roles as coaches, umpires, scorekeepers, and assistants.
This initiative has since grown into what we now call the Center City Little League (CCLL). Remaining true to its founding principles, CCLL offers a vibrant baseball program for children aged 4-12 in the Old North End Burlington, Vermont. We proudly welcome players of all gender identities, with more than 100 children taking to the fields at Roosevelt Park each year. Our league is dedicated to ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and community-centered experience for each participant.
